Golspie's inaugural Celebrity Golf Day organised by James Yuill in aid of Maggie’s Centres and Silver Rock Foundation took place on the 20th September in fine weather with 20 teams playing each with a visiting celebrity including Sir Kenneth Branagh, Jack Shepherd, Neil Innes, Moray Hunter, Clive Mantle, Jim Calder, Euan Kennedy, Sean Gilder, Dave Jessop, Bob Anderson,Robert Gwilym, Robert Pugh, Brian Irvine,Jimmy Quinn, Sion Tudor Owen, Chris Villiers and Gavin Wright.

The course was in magnificent condition courtesy of the usual excellent work by our green keepers under Alexander MacDonald and all teams enjoyed a special day of golf.

The winning team was local players William Macbeath, James Urquhart and Billy Mellville ably assisted by rugby player Jim Calder.

The event raised over £25,000 for Silver Rock Foundation and Maggie's Centre which is an exceptional sum. Well done to James Yuill and all of his helpers.

The list of the "Top 100 courses in Scotland" has just been released and, for the first time, Golspie Golf Club features in the rankings in a very healthy 69th. place.

Back in August, 2011, Mr. Jim McCann visited Golspie in his role as a course reviewer and on that day, he gave staff some very encouraging verbal feedback on the warmth of his welcome, the quality of the catering and bar facilities and also added that he had loved the course.

The following extracts from his written review clearly shows this :

"The opening 6 holes are a links delight with the rumpled fairways of the 3rd to 5th hugging the coastline. The course then turns inland to the raised ground around Ferry Wood where the excellent 9th (Paradise) is well worth its stroke index 1 rating." He goes on to say "The par 3 tenth (Lochy) with its water feature is just wonderful and it's this stretch of holes that really set Golspie apart from most typical Scottish Links courses."

Mr McCann noted the tough finish at Golspie and described the 16th and 17th holes as "the old fashioned golfing quirk – back to back par 3's" He made special mention of the 16th (Cairngorms) which he described as "an excellent hole with its wonderful two-tiered green and magnificent views across the Firth and Tarbat Ness" He concludes his review by saying "If visiting this area, make time for a round at Golspie – it's a cracking course that fully deserves its new found status as one of the best in the country."

When we asked John Davies, the Golf Club Captain, for his reaction to this latest news he said " I am delighted for everyone concerned – in particular our excellent team of green keepers who work tirelessly throughout the year to provide us with a quality course." "The 2011 season was our best ever in terms of visitor numbers – this latest accolade gives us the perfect motivation to go out and set new standards in 2012."
